Fingerling Production in Japan Interim Report Sep. 2002 - Dec. 2002
Reported by Aqua Culture Network

1. Red Sea Bream
The sales of adult fishes turned extremely bad and the last year ended with the prices low. We afraid the price of the Kg size fishes may be less than JPY500.- based on bay price at the beginning of this year.
In this worst situation the fingerlings of last fall were sold at a loss. Approx. 9 million of Tatego and 2millions were shipped to the fish farmers. The amount of stocked Tatego last fall is around 15 million due to its high survival rate even after summer. The sales started in the end of last Oct. and the prices were JPY8-10/cm(Bay based) but the prices went down since the extra cheap fishes (JP`Y3-4/cm) was introduced in Nov. Even then the sales is not so good and there seem to be approx 6million of stocked Tatego(14-20cm). The productions and prices of Akigo is lower than last year and some were sold at JPY9-10/cm(6cm up) but some hatcheries still have them in stock.
The market size of red sea bream in China is 500g. 1kg size of the live fish is mainly exported to Korea. From Korea to Japan only 2kg up size of the fish is exported. Chinese live red sea bream also seems to be exported to Japan. The price of fish is around JPY300/kg (Bay base) in Fujian Province.

*Tatego:The fingerings hatched before Bon Festival (Aug. 15)and sold within the year.
*Akigo:The fingerings hatched after Bon Festival and sold within the year

2. Flatfish
The shipment of the fingerlings to be shipped earlier starting from last Sep. was only Approx. 0.3 million of fingerlings produced by Kinki University. The reason for poor production of the others is the massive death of the fingerings due to hollow belly, deformed short tail part, and VNN. However more than 10 producers started shipping in November. Regarding the fingerlings to be shipped earlier the producers in the Inland Sea had troubles producing, while the producers in Kyushu produced comparatively stably. The adult fished became in short supply last Sep, and the price was expected to go up, but later the price went down and now the prices of adult fishes are JPY1,100-1,600/kg(Bay based) and the sales movement of fishes is slow.

Sep.-Dec., 2002:
Approx 0.29 million of fingerlings were shipped. (Shipped by 15 private companies)
Prices:JPY60-85/F(Bay based) Size:7-8cm

In China Flatfishes are cultured on land in Shandong and Liaoning Province, the northern part of China, but some hatcheries started culturing Turbot instead which is more suitable for culturing at lower temperatures and heat cooking.

3. Puffer
The shipment of the fingerings for the extra earlier shipment was only approx 0.4 million, shipped from Bio Ehime and the other two producers. The shipment of the fingerings for the earlier shipment to the ground fish farmers is expected to start from the beginning of this year and last until this March.
Almost all the producers are suffering from parasites, although the core place of the fish farming in sea cages moved from Kumamoto to Ehime, and to Nagasaki the year before last, and we have to take drastic measures to this matter.
The prices of fishes for extra earlier shipment are JPY95-100.-/f 5-6cm (Bay based)
In China the larval fishes and juveniles cultured in the coast of Bohai started to be farmed in Fujian Province. We expect the middle size of fishes should be imported into Japan from China every year.

4. Striped Jack
The Striped Jack production has been more popular since the price of Striped Jack has remained stable although the prices of Amber Jack, Yellow Tail and Red Sea Bream had gone down. The three producers who had started culturing the fishes in the sea cage by the end of last year has been producing the fingerings stably and some of them are planning to start second round. The producers who donユt have parent fishes canユt culture the fingerings. As a result supply and demand for the fish are well-balanced. The approval for using Irido Vaccine with Striped Jack is also favorable for the fish farmers

5. Sweet fish
The production has completed without any big problems although the harvest for eggs was one-two weeks later than last year nation widely and the shipment of the artificial fingerings had lasted until the beginning of this year. The fingerings of Lake Biwa origin remain popular although the demand for the artificial fingerings has been increasing (Approx. 60%). The fingerings of sea origin were rarely caught
